MAS Meeting 2023

MAS Meeting 2023

General Info & Call For Papers

We are looking forward to meeting in Bozeman after several years with no meetings. Some of you may notice a little bit of change in the schedule from past meetings, this is the result of trying something new and challenges/expenses post-pandemic. This year’s meeting is a get together to see friends and meet new friends, and invite students and young professionals to the society. The Museum of the Rockies has generously offered to host events.

Thursday, April 20, 2023: Afternoon Field Trips

Symbolism in the Cemetery: A Historic Walking Tour

Join Crystal Alegria of The Extreme History Project for a tour through Bozeman’s Sunset Hills Cemetery to discover the symbols engraved on historic headstones. Are symbols of an owl, a star, or a weeping willow merely decorative or do they have deeper meanings? Join us for a tour through Sunset Hills Cemetery to discover the symbols engraved on historic headstones and the clues they give us about the people who founded our community. Meet your guide at the entrance to Sunset Hills Cemetery at 3pm.

Yellowstone Floods

Join Connie Constan, Forest Service Archaeologist, for a tour of the historic Yellowstone River floods and effects to cultural resources.  What happened to archaeological and historic sites with the historic flooding in June of 2023?  We will visit several sites along the Yellowstone River near Gardiner, Montana.  This tour will involve driving from Bozeman to the Gardiner area.  Carpooling is encouraged. We will meet at 12pm at the south end of the Lowe’s parking lot (near Wendy’s) off of N. 19th Avenue.  It is 1.5 hours drive time to our destination.  Expected return to Bozeman is 5pm.

Student Reimbursement Grant

Student Reimbursement for Oral Presentation at 2023 MAS Meeting
The student reimbursement fund was initiated by the MAS Education Committee to encourage student paper presentations at the annual meeting. The guidelines are:

  • A student reimbursement is to go only to a student who is physically presenting a paper (at the podium) at the MAS conference.
  • If there are multiple authors, the student presenting the paper or first author would be the recipient of the reimbursement.
  • Multiple students can physically present parts of the same paper (at the podium), but only one reimbursement will be awarded for the students to split. Only one reimbursement per paper presentation.
  • If there are multiple individual papers, even on the same general topic but different specific subjects or titles, each presenter of each individual paper is eligible to receive the reimbursement, but only one reimbursement per paper.
  • It is okay if a professor or teacher co-authors a paper, the reimbursement will be awarded to the student as long as the student makes the presentation at the podium.

    Please submit the following information:
